If you own a boat you know how tough the environment is on plastic parts, especially the sun. This is no truer than for plastic port lights, as they are designed to let the sun and breeze in. Add to this aggressive over tightening to stop potential leaks and the conditions are set for eventual failure at the clasps or “dogs” of a port light.
These replacements were created when we were left with two broken port lights while out at sea. Luckily for us the conditions were settled and we didn’t take any water through the opening. But we started thinking, other than purchasing expensive replacement ports what options do we have to field-service a port light. Additionally, do you want to take up valuable space with an extra port light?
Made of carbon fiber reinforced poly carbonate, this simple fix uses the existing bolt pattern (Beckson) to screw in place, replacing the broken plastic bits. It also uses the Beckson Opening Port Dog. While these target Beckson rectangular ports, this may work for other brands.
To install simply shave off the the broken plastic tabs and use the frame mounting bolts to attach this part. For additional strength use an epoxy formulated for plastic or a plastic glue
